Unscripted Sketches 173 Cajun Vermillion

8.25.2012

It's hurricane season and my mind is already jumping forward to fall. Pretty leaves, cool weather and no windy-rainy things spinning off the coast. And, now that I think about it, fewer lizards. I need to move north ;)

I went all out with the embellishments this time. You can see some of my favorites in the cluster: our new wooden buttons (they feel like bamboo), Vintage Trinkets and Brads, a Large Pearl and shimmery ribbon. And even a little bit of stitching... the humidity must be getting to me.

Inspired by: Unscripted Sketches #173

If you haven't visited the Unscripted site yet, I hope you will try it today. It's always a treat to see how many different interpretations there can be to just one sketch. We have several designers, but if you visit again during the week, you can also see projects shared by crafty people and artists from around the world. You are invited to share your projects, as well. I hope you'll visit!

Stampin' Up! Clockworks

8.23.2012

It's been a while since we did any heat embossing, so at our last club meeting we brought out the tools and made a fun masculine card suitable for any occasion.

If you look at the main image, you can see some lines going across the image. Much like cracks in a window. You can create this look with Versamark, clear embossing powder and a heat tool. Here's how:

  1. Stamp design(s) onto cardstock. We used images from Clockworks along with 3 colors of Classic Ink stamped onto Very Vanilla card stock.
  2. Cover the entire design with Versamark. (Literally turn the pad over and press it onto your card stock; move pad and repeat pressing until you cover the entire design.)
  3. Pour clear embossing powder over the entire design. Pour off the extra.
  4. Heat set until clear and shiny.
  5. Repeat Versamark/powder/heat set until you have a thick shiny layer. With regular clear embossing powder, it may take 3 or 4 coats. With a thicker powder (like Utee), 2 layers is usually enough.
  6. Place your card stock in the freezer. (Yup - the freezer.)
  7. Leave it in the freezer for about 5 minutes. The paper will curl up.
  8. Remove it from the freezer and bend the edges of the paper back and watch it crack. You can also try pinching it to create more lines. Don't worry -you should hear a crackling sound while you do this.
  9. To emphasize the cracks, use a Stampin' Sponge to smear ink into the crevices. Use a soft tissue to remove extra ink from glossy portions.

That's it!

Our club is full, but if you would like to join us for a class, just contact me for the schedule! Thanks for stopping by!

Stampin' Up! Champagne Holiday Ornaments

8.21.2012

So, have you ever seen something in a catalog and thought, "Well, that looks good. Maybe I'll get it... later."? Well, that's what I said when I saw our Champagne Glimmer Paper in the Holiday Catalog (2012).  Then Dyanne, our club hostess last month, ordered it. When it arrived I was really tempted to hide it and tell her there was a mistake in the shipping department. heehee. But my mom raised me right (bummer) so I ordered some instead and shared it at this month's club meeting.

Project Notes:
  • Base layer is Cherry Cobbler card stock.
  • Dry embossed layer uses Core'dinations card stock. (Also introduced in the Holiday Catalog.)  This 80 lb. card stock has a monochromatic colored core. When you dry emboss, a light sanding reveals your design.  We used Early Espresso; however, this card stock is also available in Cherry Cobbler and Gumball Green.
  • The ornament and oval design were die cut using our Christmas Ornaments Framelits. The glimmer paper is easily cut using punches as well; the small circle in the center was punched out using the circle in the Itty Bitty Shapes Punch Pack
  • The bow was created using our retired satin ribbon. And our hostess' hubby treated us all to a bow maker - what a great tool to have! Thank you Nancy and Skip!

Unscripted Sketches 172 Carry On

8.18.2012

Have you seen all of the posters, t-shirts and souvenirs using the "Keep Calm..." phrases? My friend Annette is from England and was amazed at how many of these keepsakes were being sold this year. I'm not sure if she saw this phrase in particular, but here is a fun one for you. The layout is based on our Unscripted Sketches challenge this week and it was created using my favorite 2012-2013 Hostess set, Carry On.

That's right. Forget a simple "carry on". Eat some sugar and then you might possibly be able to carry on. If a cupcake doesn't do it, perhaps some tea and a scone?  :)

The "piggyback" challenge this week is to use this sketch along with the colors similar to the following: lime green, another vibrant green, an orange-y/peach color and a brown. Although I didn't include these colors in the above sample, I did find this quick card in my archives created with many of the same colors. Enjoy!

Unscripted Sketches Scentsational Morning Cup

8.11.2012

Lately I've been cutting back on caffeine. It simply doesn't like me any more and it's not worth feeling lousy when I indulge. The problem is that I'm up against my genetic code and my marriage. I submit to  you this proof: My mother is Colombian and my father is Cuban. And I married a Colombian. See?

One cup I do not intend to give up is my morning cup. It's playing nice and as this card says, "A morning without coffee... is like sleep."

The cup and steam image you see here are two images from the Scentsational Season stamp set shared in our Holiday 2012 catalog. The coordinating framelit set Holiday Collection contains a steel rule die for each image, making it easy to perfectly trim each image.

The layout of the card is based on our sketch challenge at Unscripted Sketches. CLICK HERE to visit the website and see a variety of projects based on this sketch. Thanks for stopping by!

Stampin' Up! Sassy Salutations to my Convention Buddy

8.08.2012

Every year at Stampin' Up!'s Annual Convention, one of the highlights is an area called Momento Mall. This is where Demonstrators can purchase logo merchandise and other tools for our businesses. I wasn't able to go to the gathering this year, but a local Demo by the name of Mickey Roberts blessed me by offering to be my "Convention Buddy".  She was kind enough to let me know what was in the store and also pick up a few things for me. She even added extra goodies to the bag!

Mickey makes some wonderfully detailed projects, so I have been a little hesitant about sending her a Thank You card. But greeting cards are our thing, so how could I NOT send a card? That would just be Rude! So, I finally bit the bullet and created a colorful/fun card that I hope will convey at least an inkling of my appreciation. Here's to you, Mickey!

Stampin' Up! Cannery Set Framelits

8.03.2012

I would love to wax poetic about this card. But in truth, I was just having fun playing around with a card shared on-line by Kasia Curry. Her card has a fun layout and some apples, which made me think about our Perfectly Preserved stamp set and coordinating framelits Cannery Set.

How ya like them apples? :)
