How to create faux leather

As promised during this weekend's blog hop, here are the instructions on how to make your own (faux) leather.

You will need:
Card stock (Basic Black used here)
VersaMark ink
Clear Embossing Powder
Stylus (optional)
Heat Tool
Powder Pals trays*

* these trays make it easy to catch the extra embossing powder and funnel it back into the original container. If you don't have a tray, fold a piece of printer paper in half then open it back up. Place under your project; the crease in the paper will help you contain the powder and return it to the container.

Step 1:
Completely cover your card stock with VersaMark ink.

Step 2:
Pour clear embossing powder over the entire piece of card stock.
Step 3: Lift your paper to remove the extra powder, tap on the back if necessary. Pour the extra back into your container for future use. (The small brush that comes with the trays will help you brush the powder off the tray and into the funnel area.)

Step 4 (optionA, smooth leather):
Remove the card stock from the tray.
Heat your project with the heat tool until the powder has melted and you have a nice shiny layer.

Step 4 (option B, faux alligator):
After pouring the embossing powder over your cardstock, use a stylus or the tip of your bone folder to draw lines across your paper. As you draw, lightly scrape the powder away; you'll see lines something like this.

Then repeat at a diagonal. Notice that the lines are not perfectly straight or evenly spaced. Have fun with it -  I've seen a few alligators here in Florida and they're lines can be a little wonky, too.

Now heat to melt and set the embossing powder.
And that's it! It's a cool look, isn't it?

You're faux leather is now ready for you to use on your project. You can leave it as is or cut it with your trimmer or dies.

Here is one of the finished projects; this one uses the smooth leather cut into panels. It's a shame that you can't see the shimmer too well in this picture, but I think you get the idea.

And here is the original post including two additional projects for your inspiration.

Thanks for stopping by, I hope you'll give this technique a try!
