Happy Saturday!

Today's Utah Diva layout and supplies from a Simply Scrappin' Kit led to a very quick and easy card. This one would be great to use for a stamp-a-stack!

The white portion of the card (the rolodex card) was cut out using a Sizzix clear die. I originally purchased the die for business reasons, but enjoyed using it on this card. It gives you plenty of space for either a longer sentiment, like this one, or a larger stamped image. Hooray - another product with double duty!

A note: I used Crystal Effects to attach the clear button to the die cut adhesive flower. It dried completely clear but with a strong bond. (Unlike a glue dot which you would still be able to see.)

Froggy Surprise

Ever have one of those mornings where you aren't quite awake 'til something happens that wakes you up FAST? Well, that was this morning for me.
My boys and I were in slow-mo this morning running a bit behind. We had about 2 minutes before we needed to leave and meet the school bus and I thought I'd take a minute to "potty". My son Devin decided to talk to me while I was at it (from outside the door), but I hadn't closed the door so I was nervous that he'd walk in and I'd scare him out of 10 years of his life.
So, I finish and flush and promptly feel something wet hit my tush and fall away. I look down and LO AND BEHOLD there is a very large frog on my toilet. Those of you who know what a complete CHICKEN I am probably just spewed your drink... Well, let's just say I woke up quickly and will probably never pee without looking again!!

Friday's Card

Good morning!

Do you remember the first thing that WOWed you when you started working with paper? I do - heat embossing! Seeing that stamped image covered with powder, then seeing that powder heat and lift up and turn shiny! Wow - like magic! And aside from it's "magical" qualities, it's beautiful!

This week I promised one of our newest Friday ladies that I would come up with a card that would be suitable for a wedding. With this beautiful scroll image from our Baroque Motifs stamp set, I created this card which I think will suit nicely. I love the elegant feel of the card and the "Cherish" sentiment, for me it's one of the most important parts of the vows.

I hope that you all enjoy the card and that it encourages you to think about what first wowed you in stamping and made you fall in love with the craft. Friday ladies - don't forget to RSVP. Thanks!

"hi" scrapbook page

Today I'm sharing a corporate Stampin' Up! project with you. One of the things that I love about SU! is that they are constantly providing demonstrators with creative ideas; things that are NOT complicated to make but still look great.

This 8x8 scrapbook page utilizes our Sunsine Garden Simply Scrappin' Kit. (This is the same kit we used at our recent CD Album class.) Aside from the paper and adhesive elements of the kit, the only other items used were Apricot Appeal Narrow Grosgrain, a button (from Button Bouquet) and a Stampin' Write Marker for journaling. That's it!

So you see, it can be easy to get those memories down on paper and in a book to share :)

Memorial Day

As crafters and card-makers, we often take the time to touch the lives of our friends and loved ones by sending them our handmade gifts. Today, I'd like to challenge you to share some of these blessings with a Veterans group in your area or by donating your cards to our troops.

Some info to help you get started:

1. Here's a recent article about how one family is lovingly sharing handmade cards with a local veterans group. Check in your area phone book for a location in your area, there is sure to be one nearby and I'm sure they'd love to have you stop by.

2. Here's the website for Cards for Heroes, a group who receives cards to send to our military troops. These cards are left blank so that the troops can write home with them! (Don't have any cards to send? You are also welcome to help them with postage.) When you get to their page, you'll want to click on the "mailroom". In the left hand side-bar you'll see the names of current military troops to whom you may send your cards. There are also notes on this page about what types of cards are needed most.

**One thing I noticed on a couple of different sites that I visited - if you are going to send a card to a wounded soldier, do not include glitter! Apparently this is a no-no in a hospital setting. (I guess it's kinda obvious now that it's been pointed out to me!) Thanks for stopping by and I hope you'll take the time to thank a soldier!

Good morning!
Here's our sketch for today. As you see, it's pretty straight forward. Which leaves lots of room for interpretation! :)

This time, I have 2 projects to share. Because May is National Scrapbooking Month, I thought it would be fun to make a page utilizing this same layout. And then I went a little further and used the same materials to make a greeting card (minus the picture.)


Both projects use the cardstock, designer print paper and self-adhesive embellishments found in our Tailor Made Simply Scrappin' Kit. The only additional supplies I used were a few Vintage Brads and Dimensional Adhesive. To the left of the photo, you can see how I used portions of our self-adhesive border strips to emphasize the horizontal strip of the layout. I staggered how I placed them so that it wouldn't look too heavy. And a helpful note: if you haven't used our kits before, both our re-positionable adhesive and our die cuts are truly "re-positionable". After I had my page assembled, I realized that I had attached the olive paper strip upside down; I was able to take it apart and reassemble the page without messing up anything. Whew! I may add a title or a line of journaling over the photo or leave it as is, I'm not sure yet. For now, I'll just enjoy seeing a photo of my boys and a tender moment:)

For the card, I flipped the sketch over so that I would have more room for the tag. I also stamped it with a sentiment from our Sincere Salutations stamp set with Chocolate Chip Classic ink. (It occurred to me that both of these last items came with my starter kit... and I still use them all the time!) And now I have a nice card for one of the guys in the family.

Time's running out....

Oh, no! May is almost gone! If you are like me love our paper (printed and textured) NOW is the time to stock up. The first reason: During May, purchasing 3 packages will get you a 4th free. Yup, free! And if that's not a compelling enough reason, here's another: many of these papers will no longer be available next month. (As in, gone forever.)

On June 1st, we will receive a list of items that will retire along with the current catalog on June 30th. Our current seasonal colors (called the "In Colors") will be retired, making room for next season's choices. Any papers or embellishments (ribbon, etc.) based on these colors will have to go, too. *Many of our patterned papers are based on the current "In Color" colors and will be on that list.* Aside from the money you will save by ordering now, you are also ensuring that you will be able to get the paper. Once the list is released, the items are only available while supplies last - and believe me... they don't last long!

Friday's Card

I apologize for the "darkness" of this photo. My wonderful hubby and my boys bought me a light kit and tent for taking pictures of my projects; it should be here later this week and then I'll be able to take better pics to share! :)

Pizza and a movie!

My son Devin's birthday is this week. I can't believe he'll be 10 already! (He's ready.... I'm not!)

We'll be taking a few of his buddies out for pizza and to the movies to see the 2nd "Night at the Museum". When we started making plans I remembered the great pizza invitations shared by SU! co-founder Shelli Gardner at last year's convention. They were easy to make using our Pennant Die for the Big Shot and I also got the opportunity to use up some paper scraps making the toppings! My pizza slices were made with the small pennant; the die has a larger one on it as well for jumbo slices :)

The top of the pizza flips up to show the outing information (which I typed up on the computer). A quick project to put together and it was great to make an invitation that wasn't too childish for my "big guy". Enjoy!

Another great sketch from Alicia at UDI. I almost stuck to it, too! ;)

Actually, I just made the mirror image and moved my extra element (the circle shown here) off the main image and up a little so it wouldn't interfere with my little girl. Here she is...


I love this stamp! She's from our stamp set A Kind Word and isn't she adorable? I stamped her with StazOn onto watercolor paper so that I could color her in and not worry about my paper pilling. I kept it simple and used a blender pen and the ink from the lids of my ink pads to color. Next I mounted the image onto Chocolate Chip card stock to really make it pop off the Baja Breeze card base; a little scalloping keeps her dainty.
But, you see the way she's kicking her legs? Well, that's why I moved the circle up and off the block! I didn't want it to look like she was kicking something out of the way. (Hmmmm..... another project idea...) The flower brad backed by my die cut flower give a little spark of fun, but hopefully don't overpower our main image.

Not just stamps...

Hi everyone and welcome to my kitchen :)

Yes, this is actually a picture of the built-in desk in the kitchen. As you can see, there's no paperwork being done here. Instead, we've made it into a coffee bar. But what I really wanted to share with you is the "happiness" on the wall.

The word is a vinyl rub-on, part of our Decor Elements collection. It was very easy to apply and when I'm ready to remove it, I'll be able to just peel it off with no harm to the wall.

Now what do I do?

So you have these supplies... and they're sitting there, waiting to be used... now what?

I've had the opportunity to talk to a few people this week about what I do. It's been great and it's also brought back a lot of the thoughts and feelings I had about this hobby when I first started - before it even became a small business for me. I thought I'd share some ideas today in case it's anything you all are thinking or dealing with.

I'm often asked what I do with the things (cards, 3d items, scrapbook pages, etc.) that I create. I do send them out to family and friends, occasionally even on time, lol. And the scrapbook pages are used for my kids' books or shared with others. But I do remember wondering why I was making so many cards; I mean, how many birthdays do we really celebrate? And then I realized what a great gift they can be. People love handmade items - no matter how simple they are! And, just think... how much are you saving them at a card store?! A lot!

And sometimes what I hear is that a person enjoyed the craft, bought supplies, but the supplies are now sitting on a shelf or in a box, unused. It happens! But instead of letting them sit there or putting them out at the garage sale... how about this: invite a couple of friends over. Enjoy a glass of wine or a cup of coffee and create something together. Maybe some cards to give to a teacher or that helpful cashier at the grocery store. Maybe a small bragbook for the friend/relative who hasn't seen your kids in a while? How about something that you could put in a frame to decorate your entrance table? I challenge you to dust off the supplies and spend some time doing something truly relaxing!

And if you need help, take a look in the sidebar to the left. The labels there will help you to view projects I've shared and perhaps inspire a spark of creativity! The sketches in particular can help you to put some cards together quickly and easily. Have fun :)

Make your own scissors!

Isn't this great? This is an idea that was shared last year and I've kept this picture on file as a reminder of how to make your own "scissors".
Wouldn't these look great on a scrapbook page about a crafter or on a child's school year pages?

If you are not familiar with the shapes shown, the blades are 2 shapes from our Word Window punch. The handles are 2 ovals made with both the Large and the Small Oval punches. The easiest way to do this would be to punch the Small Oval out of your Basic Black card stock and set it aside. Turn your Large Oval punch over so that you are looking at the bottom (back) of the punch. Slip the card stock back in - doing it this way will let you see where you are about to punch. Center the small oval hole within the large oval window and punch! (Repeat for the 2nd handle.) Adhere to the blades and use a small brad to hold it all together. Cute, huh? Now, go try it!

Elegant Birthday

Today's card is one that I made for my mom's birthday. She likes a more formal, feminine look for her cards and, if her reaction said anything, I got it right this time!

Simple ingredients and a simple layout can really make an elegant card. Here's what I used:

Ways to Celebrate Mother's Day

Here's some helpful information from around the world on how you can make your Mother feel special today. In case my husband and kids are reading - I've marked some of my favorite ideas ;) Enjoy!

Canada - Canada was one of the first nation’s to pick up the US version of Mother’s Day, making it a national holiday in 1909, one year later the United States did. The customs largely reflect those of its southern neighbor, although in Canada there seems to be an added emphasis on doing chores for the Mother and cooking her supper.

Australia - The Australian Mother’s Day is similar to that of the United States, in which families visit each other and dinners. In addition to flowers, cards, jewelry and chocolates, it is customary for Australians to exchange perfume and teas on Mother’s Day.

Finland - In Finland Mother’s Day is called aidipayiva. In the morning the family arises and takes a walk, picking the new flowers which bloom this time of year and making a bouquet for the mother. A particular flower called the valkovuokko is favored. This is a small white pungent flower. Back home Mom is presented with a decorated bouquet, while also being served breakfast in bed.

Serbia - The Sunday prior to Mother’s Day is commemorated by a ritual in which parents tie up their young ones until they promise to behave themselves. Retribution comes a week later when children bind their mother until she offers them candy and other treats. But it doesn’t end on Mother’s Day. The following Sunday it’s the father’s turn to be tied up until he promises some pricey gifts. (Hon - we can skip the 2nd part...lol)

And a great one for any time of the year....
Sweden - Sweden’s Mother’s Day, which takes place on the last Sunday in May, has a strong charitable focus: the Swedish Red Cross sells small plastic flowers leading up to the holiday, and the proceeds raised are given to poor mothers and their children.

I finally got to play with some great Window Sheets from our Occasions Mini Catalog. This one is the simplest of the group with swiss dots, but it was just the touch I needed to dress up my card. Working with acrylic sheets can be tricky; after all, you'll be able to see any adhesive you use! However, the layout of the sketch allowed me to put adhesive behind each of the stamped images - hiding it completely! (Click here to see the other designs.)

The flowerpot and boots images are also from the mini catalog; they are part of a set called Scene in a Garden. The phrase, however, is from a full catalog set titled Bella's Bloom. A little bit of watercoloring added color to the images and some extra embellishments turned the center portion into a little hanging sign. Thoughts and Prayers

Today's card is a special one. Not only is it the one my Friday class will be making, it's one that I'll be sending to a friend who's husband has been ill. I wanted to send something she'll like, but not anything too frou-frou because I want him to like it, too! :)

The card uses a simple layout, but I think the colors make it stand out, don't you? The card base (Baja Breeze) is topped with a portion of Designer Series Paper from our Tailor Made Simply Scrappin' Kit. I've sponged the edges of the base and the Kraft portion (cut with our Top Note die) to tone them down a bit and soften the edges. The leaf is from our Stampin' Up! exclusive Little Leaves Sizzlits die; I think it looks great topped with this flower from our Boho Flower Punch.

The sentiment is the first half of a stamp from our Thoughts & Prayers stamp set. I isolated the portion I wanted to use and inked it with my Close to Cocoa Stampin' Write marker. The rest of the phrase ("Please know that I care.") is on the inside of the card. I cleaned the stamp then used the marker to again isolate only the portion I wanted before stamping.

Note: Don't have a marker? Cover the unwanted portion of the image with a piece of scotch tape and ink up your stamp with your ink pad. Remove the tape and stamp. Wash your stamp well before inking, re-taping and stamping the rest. Between these two steps I usually stamp the image on scratch paper just to make sure the image really is clean before proceeding - don't want the "other" portion to show up unexpectedly!

Just in time for summer reading

Why am I talking about summer already? Well, the kiddos get out of school in just a few weeks and I'm already looking forward to the many books I'll get to read while at the park, beach and pool. The bookmark above is one I made a few weeks ago and is one of my favorites. Here's another look at it so that you can get a better idea of how it functions.

The flower portion was made with 3 layers of Summer Sun cardstock and our 5 Petal Punch. I added some interest to the flower dabbing on color with Stampin' Pastels. Although you can't see it in these photos, there are magnets attached to the back of both the circle (punched out with a 1 3/8" circle punch) and the flower. Two strips of 1/4" Narrow White Grosgrain attach the pieces and let them hang over the page. The magnets will cling to each other and hold onto your page - keeping your place for you! It was a quick and easy project to put together, but I know I'm going to love using it - I won't lose my place every time I have to get up and remind the kids that there's "NO running around the pool!".

3 Scrapbooking Myths - busted!

When I tell people about what I do, I often hear things like; "I am not creative at all", "I just don't have the time" , "I would love to be able to scrapbook". If you have the desire to scrapbook, you can make to happen. Read on... three common scrapbooking myths are about to be BUSTED!

Scrapbooking Myth #1: There's no time to scrapbook. Scrapping doesn't require more time than you are willing to give to yourself for other activities (like exercise or the spa), it just requires scheduling. Most retail stores post their scrapbooking times 2 to 3 months in advance.

Independent consultants offer workshops as well and will likely have their schedules prepared 4 to 6 months in advance. My friend, Jackie, only scrapbooks twice a year - at weekend retreat events an independent consultant runs. Jackie knows 6 months in advance when the next retreat will happen and works her family calendar around it. She is able to remain up to date with her photo projects by simply making the most of these two opportunities. In my experience, busy people get things done - because of planning.

Scrapbooking Myth #2: You have to be creative to make a scrapbook style photo album. Putting photos into safe albums is mostly about preserving the memories & stories that the photos represent. Some of my favorite album pages are 'naked'. They lack any stickers or embellishments whatsoever. I love pages like this because they celebrate the memories. Digital scrapbooking and pre-designed layouts make things easier. Just add pictures and your words and you have a beautiful page!

Scrapbooking Myth #3: Scrapbooks are for families with kids. As long as you are taking pictures, kids or no kids, there's plenty to work on! Look at your pictures, aren't they worthy of celebration? It's time to show off your exciting life! Celebrate your everyday, your family and friends. Your story is worth telling and sharing, putting these stories and memories into a safe album is a great way to do this! Now that you know how to bust these myths, it is time to get started. Find a few pictures, find some friends or some help from a store or consultant and celebrate your memories.

Check out this great CD album! That's right, the front and back of this scrapbook are altered CD's. I don't want to ruin the surprise for my class attendees on Sunday, May 17th so I won't share everything about this album; but, I can tell you that I used a Simply Scrappin' kit to make putting this project together a simple and fun thing!

Good Morning! Today's challenge at UDI was a great one! I finally took the time to use my Scallop Circle Bigz die to make my own scallop circle notes. (Don't yet own a Big shot or the die I've used? Carousel Notes, pictured on 157 of our Spring & Summer collection are a great way to start, too!) For my card, I used a piece of Kiwi Kiss card stock measuring 4-1/4" x 8-1/2" and scored it at 4-1/4, folding it down to make a card base 4-1/4" square. I then positioned this on my die so that a portion of the folded piece would not be cut. I also ran a scrap piece of Raspberry Tart designer series paper through at the same time. Once cut, I trimmed the dsp down so that it would just cover the bottom half of the card.
For the sentiment, I used Perfect Plum Classic ink and "kind" from our Baroque Motifs stamp set, stamping it on to Pink Pirouette card stock. I sponged some Real Red classic ink onto it and then punched the sentiment out with our Designer Label punch, topping it with hardware from our Silver Hodgepodge kit. White organdy ribbon, a scrap of basic black cardstock and clear rhinestone jewels add the finishing touches. And that's it for my scalloped card! If/when I decide to mail it I'll have two options. Because the largest dimension is 4-1/4, it will still fit in our medium (invitation sized) envelopes. Or, I could also make my own square envelope using this technique I shared with you previously.
